Re: Sent out my first short story
No, we don't.
Btw, my agency is sending out my revised novel manuscript to several publishers today. The waiting game will get more interesting now.

Re: Sent out my first short story
Oh, sorry to hear that Firle.
Did you get any good critique back? Or just one of those lousy form letters? Or worse yet...the postcards!
Firle, if you still believe in the story - as is - find another maket and slip it right back into the mail, this week! If you've had some lingering concerns about your tale, or some good advice back fromm the rejecting market, maybe a quick editoral touch-up...and then slip it right back into the mail!
Either way... I'm pulling for you!
Best of luck!

Re: Sent out my first short story
Thanks, McDoogle, I really need that. I'm still trying not to cry.
I submitted by email, and they answered through email, as well. They did give me advice and were actually being rather nice about the whole thing. Their suggestions go very much against what I want to do with my story, though.
It's a difficult story to place, but I'll try again, don't worry. I just need a day or two to get over this.

Re: Sent out my first short story
Firle,
I agree with McDoogle. If you think your story has promise, then keep plugging at it. You know your story and the direction you want it to go in. Drastic changes wouldn't make it your story anymore. There are other markets. And, don't you be crying. It breaks my heart to hear a woman cry.
At least a rejection is better than not hearinf from them at all. At least they read it. I'm still waiting to hear back about one of my stories.
Good luck with Minkus...and keep putting it out there !

Re: Sent out my first short story
Well, I feel your pain Firle, because I've only had rejections too!
I sent out a humor story to an in-state mag, and received a purple postcard back, stating: "Sorry... it isn't a reading period!" Not according to my market research! What a waste.
Then I sent a short horror story with a twist to a mag with a good reputation for feedback. And that's what I was sent back. Only feedback. But, based on that feedback, I wrote my so-called Zombie-like story, and submitted that to them addressing all of their previous concerns. I received another rejection letter only stating, "We're not publishing your story. We're not sure why." That's helpful feedback!
So I've been pretty discouraged since then. That was my last submission attempt. I've never tried an online mag before. I guess I need to take my own advice and push myself to make more submissions...
I'm sure you'll feed a good home for Minkus! I know you're a quality writer, Firle! Stick with it!!!

Re: Sent out my first short story
*hugs*
Oh, McDoogle, that second rejection was unfair. Still, we can't really do anything else than to give our best and then send out those stories.
Thanks, guys, you're really making my day. And you have no idea how bad it was. If I can encourage you to submit again as well, that would be wonderful.

Re: Sent out my first short story
You've gotten all good advice here, Firle. Everyone is right--you just have to keep sending them out. The only reason any stories get published is that the author kept sending them out until they sold.
Rejections *are* awful most of the time. But once you've enough of them it's easier to shrug them off (I speak from experience!). In the meantime, eat some ice cream, find a new market, and work on something else.

Re: Sent out my first short story
Thanks, Sherry, I'm doing just that.
Haven't started to look for a new market just yet, but I'm deep into the reworking of my YA novel, which is great fun.
