Trekkies to the rescue

Hi!
Two characters in my novel have identified themselves to me as "Trekkies." This was a surprise to me and while I think it will add a dimension to the work, I don't know Star Trek intimately. I don't even know if a Trekie is spelled like that or with two k's. No. That looks funny. It must be two.

So I'm posting this topic in order to get help with my details. I am quite familiar (though it's been years) with the original series and I saw the first three or four movies... but after that it starts to get fuzzy. I've looked at some Star Trek websites and I'm sure I can get info but I was hoping for some personal input from a real trekkie.

Should it be capitalized?

What I want to write is a dialogue/discussion/argument between these two characters about some arcane details only Trekkies would know or care about. A Trekkie controversy or point of contention that is of no importance... unless you're really into it. I don't care from what series... though I'm partial to the one Data is in. Isn't that "First Generation?" I suppose it could be a discussion about which is the best series but I really wanted it to be more detailed than that. Any ideas?

Thanks,
nanc

The first point is that we Trekkies refuse to be called Trekkies emoticon Oh, well, maybe it's acceptable in America...

The most important point any two "Trekkies" must establish is, who is the best captain of the Enterprise? As soon as you know how the other person answers this, you not only know which series of Star Trek he prefers (vital information), you also know most of what you need to know about his life and personality.

If he should dare to name the wrong captain, the debate doesn't end there. You use every opportunity to re-open it in order to (a) ridicule his choice or (b) convert him to the true path, as the moods takes you.

Hope this helps emoticon

Data was from "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

Dave is right, one of the number one topics us 'Trekkies' may discuss is who was the best captain. Of course, we all know that was Ben Sisko of Deep Space Nine.

Feel free to ask your questions! I've been following Star Trek for almost twenty years.

Heh. I have a Star Trek Encyclopedia, and was almost tempted to get it out yesterday. emoticon

I'm not a Trekkie (yeah, duh), and I most certainly haven't watched every single program of every series. emoticon Even so, I could help out with some detail, especially on Archaeology in Star Trek.

Yes, Data was in "Next Generation" and the last three or four movies. (That depends on whether "Nemesis" can be counted as movie or will be booked as desaster.)

Nemisis. I wouldn't so much call it a disaster as I would have marked it down as a bad idea. First Contact was the only good TNG movie.

I wouldn't have minded Nemesis so much if it had been an odd-numbered movie. But as it was even numbered (the 10th), I felt cheated.

(For the uninitiated -- it's generally agreed that the even-numbered Star Trek movies are far superior to the odd-numbered ones.)

Nancy, I get the feeling you'll get some answers just by reading the discussions on this thread! emoticon

Remember my offer to loan you any of the original series or Next Gen tapes is still open. And yes, you could get a lot of mileage out of the "best captain" debate. (Got to be Picard for me.)

This seems like the appropriate place to boast that I own a copy of the final draft script for the ST:TNG episode "All Good Things..." personally autographed to me by Majel Barrett. emoticon

I met Majel at a convention in Seattle back in '93. She is a wonderful woman! Marina Sirtis was gorgeous, very short and had a raunchy mouth!

Wow! I've hit the jackpot! And yes, Sherry, as I was reading the posts I thought...
Mwa-ha-haaa! I've got my dialogue written!

Keep going, this is a treasure box... and fun.

AND... I wasn't going to mention my up close and personal Star Trek connection but since the name-dropping has already begun I can *shucks* tell you that I know Brent Spiner. That's WHY I am more interested in the Data series. We went to Johnston Jr. High School in Houston, Texas. His name was Brent Mintz then and we were in the Speech Club (closest thing to a Drama club) together. Yes, he was already intent on being an actor. He was a cut-up - very funny and entertaining but also sweet and of course, talented. My current husband, Barry, who was also with us in the Speech Club (he was a debater), knew Brent better than I did. In fact, Brent was appearing on Broadway ("1776" ) in 1970-something when Barry was getting married the first time in nearby Connecticut so Brent (along with Tommy Schlamme, creator of The West Wing and another class mate) went to his wedding.

We were in Houston in December and Barry's best friend who still sees Brent, told us that he has a new baby! His first. Yikes. And don't believe those celebrity bios say about his age. I've been noticing him getting younger (in print) all these years. Alas, even robots age.

What about that? Was there ever any reason given for the fact that Data had wrinkles? Or was I not supposed to notice that?

Thanks so much. I love all this. Keep going. I vote Picard too. Sooo sexy.

That is sooooo cool about your history with Brent!

As far as Data's wrinkles, he was endevoring to be more human throughout The Next Generation, so one could assume that for storyline purposes, he was slowly incorporating wrinkles into his skin to give him an older appearance.
