The Elevator

Zeke Holloway is a Chicago cop with a love for history. On the morning of September 11th, 2001, Zeke is called into duty to help evacuate the Sears Tower. Taking an elevator to the top floors, Zeke emerges from the elevator, but not back into the world he knows.
Zeke enters a world where the Nazis won World War II and now control the Earth. Zeke must find a way home, enlisting the help of the Japanese scientist that inadvertantly brought him to this world while trying to stay one step ahead of a Nazi SS officer who is very close to him...

While I am a sci-fi writer, I see this as being more of a 'twilight zone' type of story.
How does the basic plot synopsis sound?

Interesting!
I love the title. My first reaction was that you'd need to pull in present day geo-political issues because it's set on Sept. 11. Otherwise, why make it happen on that day?

That would complicate things considerably but it would be an interesting scenario to know what the present day situation might be like with regard to Islamic Fundamentalism if the Germans had been the world superpower all these years instead of the US.

To reply to nuanc:

The idea in how Sept. 11th would have played out in the alternate reality is that WTC would have been attacked by a Jewish extremist group, perhaps for much the same reasons that Al Qaida attacked our WTC.

Bottom line is that I would use Sept. 11th as more of a catalyst in the story rather than a story engine.

I like the story idea. It's fascinating, but I don't like the use of September 11. I think it is still too sensitive an issue to utilize in a story. I think a fictional date, with your own backstory would suit the purpose just as well, if not better.

Cheers,
Julia

Duely noted, Julia. I'll look at changing the date... maybe make it a near future/cyberpunk story.

I can see you were waaaay ahead of me, Jay, but then as the creator, that's appropriate. I like this idea. I think it's a interesting concept and not inappropriate. If there isn't already an anthology out with fictional short stories about Sept 11, there will be. And if anyone hears of one, please tell me! because I wrote a story about a teacher who is still dealing with her feelings about it three years later. So far no luck with it.

'The Elevator' is still essentially in the planning stages. I have the prolouge and the first two scenes of Chapter 1 laid out. I think what I may do is transfer the outline from paper to electronic media and get it posted in the excerpts forum so you can see what ideas I have for the start of the book.

I've been reading alternate history fiction for the past month, Harry Turtledove, and what catches me is that familiar events are re-played with new players. So, the idea of Jewish terrorists works in a way, some events are inevitable.
I'd be interesting in seeing more. I think it's an interesting idea in both the parallel universe aspects and the alternate history aspects. What would the implications be of the Nazis finding this guy, realizing there is an unconquered world, or worse a world in which the master plan failed and ....
