Before, during, after
My current project is a mystery short story that starts with a body in the trunk of a car. (See exerpts).
It's a short intro, purposefully. I want it to be short, sharp, and kind of bam!
So, I'm starting *after*.
And the story is the exploration of who killed Jackson?
Is it the artist he owes money to? The artist whose name he's blackened with insinuations of child molestation?
Is it the mayor? The fellow whose wife has been having an affair with Jackson, the fellow Jackson has pressured into giving him zoning concessions?
Is it one of the rich lesbians running the upscale marina/resort? Their fear of exposure has led to them giving Jackson rooms and moorage for his tourism business at a rate that leaves their business haemorrhaging.

Re: Before, during, after
Hey, Wanda, are you still working on this or did you finish it?
The last story I wrote was a kind of a mystery, although I don't know if the mystery itself was the crux of the story or not. It was kind of a mixture. I have to do some rewriting on it this month so it may yet develop more in one direction or another.

Re: Before, during, after
I finished this, and am quite happy with it. I sent it to the Wolfe Island Mystery contest.
The story is almost completely played out in conversations.
I may have, in the end, tipped too much into revealing before the reveal at the end.
And now that I'm struggling with one of the other stories I'm working on, I keep coming back to the strategy I used for writing the mystery (but it doesn't work for the spec fic piece I'm doing).
